On May 13, 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary began appearing to three Portuguese children - Lucia Santos, and her cousins Francisca Marto and Jacinta Marto. The Blessed Virgin consistently appeared to them every 13th of the month until October 13, 1917. In her appearances, the Blessed Virgin Mary requested, among others, the frequent praying of the Holy Rosary, making acts of reparation and sacrifice, and practicing the Five First Saturday devotion.
The apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary culminated on October 13, 1917 with the, "miracle of the sun" which was witnessed by thousands of Portuguese.
The Bishop of the Diocese of Leira, where Fatima belongs, declared on October 13, 1930 that the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the three children were worthy of belief.
Today, May 13, 2017, marks the 100th anniversary of the first apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta. Let us, then, celebrate it by going to confession, receiving communion, and praying the rosary.
